Trump Threatens New Russia Sanctions Over Ukraine Attacks

WASHINGTON, March 7, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Former President Donald Trump has threatened to impose fresh sanctions and tariffs on Russia in response to its continued bombardment of Ukraine. This comes after he had previously suspended US aid to Kyiv, citing a desire to encourage diplomatic efforts.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED.” He added, “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late.”

This warning follows Russia’s recent missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Just days before, the Trump administration halted US military aid and intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, following a contentious disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

During a televised meeting at the White House on February 28, Trump and Vice President JD Vance had openly criticised Zelensky, accusing him of ingratitude despite receiving billions of dollars in US military assistance.

Trump’s stance has sparked backlash both from domestic opponents and international allies, with many accusing him of aligning himself with Russia, which launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Furthermore, the United States, under Trump, sided with Russia against its European allies in a series of UN resolutions calling for an end to the war, but without emphasising Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

In a significant diplomatic move, Trump held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month, marking the beginning of what could be a shift toward restoring normal relations and potentially rolling back sanctions imposed under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Contextual Background:

The ongoing war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has resulted in widespread destruction and significant geopolitical tensions. Russia’s bombardments and missile strikes have disrupted Ukraine’s infrastructure, with energy facilities being a frequent target.

The US, under President Biden, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, providing extensive military aid and imposing severe sanctions on Russia. However, Trump’s recent statements and actions reflect his more isolationist and Russia-friendly approach, which has caused a stir within both domestic and international political circles.
