Choosing to remain in Iran rather than emigrate, she has dedicated herself to uplifting women’s lives through culinary arts and entrepreneurship.

A Culinary Vision Rooted in Iran

Shokouhivand’s passion for baking began in her childhood, leading her to study hospitality management at Islamic Azad University. In 2017, she honed her skills at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, a prestigious culinary institution. Upon returning to Tehran, she transformed a former handbag shop into “Femme Chic,” a patisserie that marries French pastry techniques with Iranian flavours.

Her creations, such as the “Baba Tabrizi”—a saffron and cardamom-infused twist on the classic baba au rhum—exemplify this fusion. By incorporating local ingredients like pistachios, saffron, and sumac, she not only celebrates Iranian culinary heritage but also adapts to the challenges posed by international sanctions that limit access to imported goods.

Empowering Women Through Employment

Together with her husband, Babak Mehrabani, Shokouhivand has expanded her business to employ 70 individuals, predominantly women. This initiative provides not only economic opportunities but also a platform for women to gain independence and professional growth in a society where such prospects are often limited.

“It’s only by working here that we’ll change things in Iran,” Shokouhivand asserts, emphasizing her commitment to effecting change from within the country.

Iran’s economy has been under severe strain, with inflation rates soaring above 35% as of February 2025.The cost of essential goods and services has risen sharply, exacerbating the financial burden on citizens.

The death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, following her arrest for allegedly violating hijab regulations, ignited widespread protests and the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement.This movement has galvanized calls for greater freedoms and rights for women in Iran.

Shokouhivand observes a gradual shift in societal attitudes, noting that more women are choosing not to wear the obligatory headscarf in public spaces. “Despite everything, I remain optimistic for women in Iran,” she remarks, reflecting a cautious hope for progressive change.

International Recognition and Future Aspirations

In August 2023, Shokouhivand’s contributions to culinary arts were internationally recognized when she was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole by the French Ministry of Agriculture—the first Iranian female pastry chef to receive this honour.

Looking ahead, she and her husband aspire to expand their patisserie to other Iranian cities like Shiraz and Mashhad, and potentially to international locations such as Dubai, Doha, and even Paris. These ambitions underscore their dedication to showcasing Iranian culinary artistry on a global stage.
