President pays tributes to armed forces martyrs, On the occasion of Armed Forces Day, President M. Abdul Hamid today paid eloquent tribute to the Armed Forces martyrs who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the War of Liberation in 1971. In remembrance of the martyrs, the President, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, laid a wreath at the altar of Shikha Anirban (flame eternal) in the Dhaka Cantonment this morning. He then observed a period of solemn silence.

At that time, a smartly dressed contingent of the Army, Navy, and Air Force saluted. There, President Hamid also added his signature to the guest book.
Earlier, on his arrival at Shikha Anirban, Chief of Army Staff General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan and Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division (AFD) Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman received the President.
On this date in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Troops, which included an Army, Navy, and Air Force, were established and began a full-scale assault on the Pakistani occupying forces. Since the nation’s independence, this historic day has been celebrated annually as Armed Forces Day.
