Pegasus Spyware Found Journalists Phones French: Journalists’ Phones French French intelligence authorities have confirmed that Pegasus spyware has been discovered on the phones of three journalists, including a senior staff member of France 24’s international television station. It’s the first time an independent and official body has backed up findings from the Pegasus project – a group of 17 media organizations, including the Guardian.
A leaked list of 50,000 numbers that has been believed to have been identified by clients of Israeli firm NSO Group since 2016 and shared access with their media partners was initially accessible to the Forbidden Stories, a Paris-based nonprofit media organization, and Amnesty International.

According to The Guardian, Anssi discovered digital traces of NSO Group’s hacking spyware on the television journalist’s phone and reported its findings to the Paris public prosecutor’s office, which is overseeing the investigation into possible hacking. Telephones belonging to Lénaïg Bredoux, an investigative journalist at French investigative website Mediapart, and site director Edwy Plenel were also checked for Pegasus, according to The Guardian.

At least 180 journalists throughout the world are believed to have been chosen as potential targets in advance of possible surveillance by government clients of NSO, according to Forbidden Stories. According to a source at France 24, the broadcaster was “extremely shocked” when it found out one of its personnel had been surveilled.
The source stated, “We are dumbfounded and furious that journalists could be the target of surveillance. We will not accept this lying down. There will be legal action on our hands.” According to Le Monde, a France 24 journalist based in Paris was chosen for “eventually being monitored.” The spyware was used three times by police experts to target the journalist’s phone: May 2019, September 2020, and January 2021, according to the paper.
