No possibility of food crisis in country: Dr Razzaque

No possibility of food crisis in country: Dr Razzaque,  Agriculture Minister Dr. M. Abdur Razzaque today rejected the idea that there might be famine in the nation and asserted that there won’t be one unless major natural disaster strikes. “Good Aman crop and expected bumper yield coupled with huge local food stock, ultimately make it clear that the country is not at risk of food crisis or famine,” he said. The minister said this while attending at Aman crop-cutting festival at Haibathpur under Damurhuda Upazila here on Tuesday morning.

Dr. Razzaque stated that the nation has enough food to last through any natural calamity without experiencing a food crisis in the wake of the global crisis brought on by the Russia-Ukraine war. In response to a question about the nation’s production of onions, Dr. Razzaque stated that the government is carrying out a plan to lessen its reliance on imports, adding that “Onion output has increased by about 10 lakh tonnes in the last two years.” He claimed that although the nation consistently produces an adequate amount of onions, a significant amount of them are damaged each year due to a lack of advancements in preservation technology.

Accordingly, the nation must import onion every year to keep up with demand, according to the minister, who visited the upazila’s summer onion field during his visit. “We are giving importance to summer season onion farming,” the minister said. “Necessary inputs, including seed, fertilizer, and technology, are being provided to the farmers. If we can make the summer season onion popular among the farmers, then the country will not only become self-sufficient in onion production, but it will also export onion abroad.”
