Monitor Claims Syrian Security Forces ‘Executed’ 52 Alawites in Latakia

BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 7, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – A Syrian war monitor reported on Friday that security forces in Syria had “executed” 52 members of the Alawite minority in Latakia province. The violence occurred following clashes between security forces and gunmen loyal to former President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, stated that security forces carried out the executions in the towns of Al-Shir and Al-Mukhtariya, located in the Latakia countryside. The claims were based on videos verified by the group, alongside testimonies from the victims’ relatives.

Supplementary Information:
Latakia, located on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, is a stronghold for the Alawite community, which has long supported Assad’s regime. Tensions in the region have been rising as various factions and militias continue to operate despite the official end of the civil war. The Alawite minority, a Shia sect, has faced increasing persecution and violence from opposition groups over the years, exacerbating sectarian tensions.
