The resolution’s main concern was the rohin’gya Muslims’ and other minorities’ human rights condition in Myanmar, especially in light of recent political developments. It urged Myanmar to resolve the underlying issues causing the Rohingya crisis and to create a welcoming climate in Rakhine to encourage the rohin’gyas’ voluntary, secure, and respectful return to Myanmar, where they originally came from.

“Pending their return, the rohin’gyas living in the camps deserve the solidarity of the international community. The humanitarian response plan needs to be adequately funded,” said Bangladesh’s Charge de Affairs Md Monwar Hossain during the adoption of the resolution. In his statement, he also expressed appreciation to OIC and EU for their leadership on this important human rights issue referring to the untenability of the protracted presence of Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

“While we provided shelter to the fleeing rohin’gyas out of humanitarian consideration, they were always meant to return to Myanmar,” Hossain said. To that end, Bangladesh has taken multi-pronged diplomatic efforts – both at the bilateral and multilateral fronts with a view to improving the conditions in Myanmar and facilitating their safe, voluntary and sustainable return, he said.

Myanmar was urged in the resolution to fully cooperate with the special representative of the UN secretary general for Myanmar as well as all UN human rights bodies. The resolution urged for the quick implementation of ASEAN’s five-point consensus and acknowledged the crucial role that regional nations and organizations, like ASEAN, have played in resolving the political and humanitarian situation in Myanmar.

It took note of the ongoing processes for justice and accountability and welcomed changes to the case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice and the investigation by the International Criminal Court’s Prosecution. The resolution showed support for Bangladesh and acknowledged its humanitarian efforts as well as its continued cooperation with the ICC, IIMM, and other accountability mechanisms in order to ensure that those responsible for the human rights violations committed against the rohin’gya in Myanmar are brought to justice.

In the spirit of sharing responsibilities and burdens, the member nations have also been asked to continue providing humanitarian aid to the Rohingya living in Bangladesh. It is deeply regrettable that the situation in Myanmar keeps getting worse, delaying the return of the rohin’gya people to their country of origin. This UN resolution is a rare example of cross-regional solidarity for the rohin’gya Muslims and their cause. The UN member states now have the much-needed impetus to step up their joint efforts to find lasting solutions for the Rohingyas.
