Five killed in Rangpur road accident, Five people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between an ambulance and auto-rickshaw at the Negtichhera Bridge point on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway under Taraganj upazila here today. “The mishap occurred when a truck and an ambulance hit the three-wheeler from the opposite direction and another truck ran over both of the ill-fated vehicles killing four people and injuring three others on the spot at 6:45 pm,” Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Rangpur Highway Circle Zahidur Rahman Chowdhury told BSS over cell phone tonight from the spot.

The battery-run auto-rickshaw was going to Saidpur in Nilphamari from Taraganj Bus Stand while the ambulance was going to Rangpur from Saidpur. The truck was running behind the ambulance and ran over the ill-fated auto-rickshaw and ambulance within a few seconds of the mishap.

Being informed, the fire service and civil defense personnel, and police immediately rushed to the spot, rescued four bodies and injured persons, and sent them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH). “One of the critically injured auto-rickshaw passengers died at RpMCH while the others are undergoing treatments there,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Taraganj Highway police station Sheikh Mohammad Mahbub Morshed.
The deceased were Sahir Uddin, 40, of village Sherbant Bhabanioganj, Khademul Islam, 38, and Shuklal Basfor, 50, of village Patildanga and Azanur Rahman, 45, and Habib Ullah, 45, of village Shermant Baniyapara in upazila of Rangpur. “We have seized the damaged auto-rickshaw and ambulance although the ambulance driver fled the scene,” the OC said, adding that a case has been lodged with the Taraganj police station tonight.
