People will resist if BNP tries to create anarchy : Hasan,  Dr. Hasan Mahmud, the minister of information and broadcasting, claimed today that the BNP is attempting to restore anarchy throughout the nation, including in Dhaka, and that they anticipate people will thwart their evil plans. `We have instructed our party leaders and activists to behave with restraint despite BNP’s provocative speeches’ he said.

The grenade attack on the AL rally on August 21, 2004, according to the AL joint secretary, was sponsored by the BNP government at the time. After attending the 57th Chattogram University (CU) Day event held at Zarultala of the CU campus here, Dr. Hasan responded to a question by making this statement. The function was overseen by CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shirin Akhtar, and the keynote paper was read by Montasir Mamun, Professor of the Bangabandhu Chair at CU.

CU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Benu Kumar Dey, former Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Alauddin, President of the CU Alumni Association and former Principal Secretary Dr. Abdul Karim, its general secretary Mahabubul Alam, former CUCSU VPs Mazharul Haque Shah and Nazim Uddin, among others, spoke at the event. SM Monirul Hasan, the university’s acting registrar, also gave a welcome address.

NM Ziaul Alam, Senior Secretary of the Information and Communication Technology ministry delivered the speech as the honored guest online. Dr. Hasan said BNP attacked Sheikh Helal MP’s rally and killed several people there, BNP repeatedly bombed on AL meetings, including the public meetings of SM Kibria, Suranjit Sengupta and Ahsan Ullah Master.

Replying to another query over BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul’s statement that ‘BNP cannot be suppressed like Hefazat’, Dr Hasan mentioned that there was not a single explosion in the rallies of BNP when AL was in state power. `The government has always taken measures so that they can gather in their meetings in a peaceful manner’ Hasan saiid.

Dr Hasan Mahmud said when BNP was in power, AL was not allowed to hold any rally. `We set up barbed wire fencing on both sides infront of AL central office. We could not go outside that fence’ he added. Dr. Hasan said the activities of the university is not only teaching and awarding degrees, but also to practice knowledge. “If the reputation of this university spreads globally, then its activities are successful,” he added.

In order to boost the university’s prestige, he persuaded the administration to create an annual schedule of foreign seminars and symposiums. The minister further requested that a reputable journal with regular publication of research articles be established by the CU authority. “If the journal is elevated to an international level, the university will become more significant and prestigious. The university will then have access to the outside world, he said. The Minister of Information has asked the CU authorities to allow the institution to offer a Master of Fine Arts program. Later, Dr. Hasan, a former CU student, went to Suhrawardy Hall to see where he had slept as a student there. He spent some time in his living space.
