Momen stresses direct shipping connectivity with Sri Lanka, Dr. A K Abdul Momen, Bangladesh’s foreign minister, has emphasized the importance of establishing direct shipping connections with Sri Lanka in order to strengthen bilateral trade ties. He also emphasized the need for the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between the two nations to resume negotiations.

Bangladesh foreign-minister put the importance while holding a meeting with his visiting Sri Lankan counterpart Ali Sabry on Wednesday on the eve of 22nd ministerial meeting of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in the capital, a foreign ministry press release said here today.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the wide spectrum of bilateral relations and expressed hope to work closely together for the betterment of the two peoples and inclusive development of the region. Momen urged Sri Lanka to increase import of agricultural products and pharmaceuticals from Bangladesh at an affordable price. Sri Lankan foreign minister said that his country is keen to working in close partnership with Bangladesh.
The two presidents decided to hasten the procedures needed to create an institutional framework for regular and in-depth conversations between the two nations at the level of the foreign-minister. The topic of supporting each other’s candidacies at various international fora was also thoroughly examined.
Momen also asked Sri Lanka for assistance in resettling the forcibly displaced citizens of Myanmar in a sustainable manner. In order to attend the 22nd ministerial conference IORA, which is taking place here today, Ali Sabry arrived in Dhaka yesterday afternoon.
